Oxalá houvesse uma escola de música assim em nosso campo!! Mas não. Acho que é na China. Mas como gosto muito do piano, não resisti!

Chegando outono!!

Bom, de novo no Chile. O Metro de Santiago tem parecidoo com o metro de São Paulo, só que na cidade de SP há mais habitantes do que todo Chile rsrs. E a segunda foto foi na janta duma casa dos nossos em Talca. O avô não segue, mas a avó sim. A nora deles está na foto também, ela é irmã mais nova (de uns 12 ou 13 filhos!!) do meu companheiro deste ano. São uma família muito especial.

Bueno, de nuevo en Chile. El Metro de Santiago se parece al de São Paulo, sólo que en la ciudad de SP hay más habitantes que en todo Chile jaja. Y la segunda foto fue en la cena en una casa de los nuestros en Talca. El abuelito no es entregado, pero la abuelita sí. Su nuera de ellos está también en la foto, ella es la hermana menor (de unos 12 ó 13 hijos!!) de mi compañero de este año. Son una familia muy especial.

So, back in Chile again. The Santiago Metro looks like the one in São Paulo, except that in the city of SP there are more inhabitants than in all of Chile, haha. And the second photo was at the supper table in the home of some of our friends in Talca. The grandpa doesn’t profess, but the grandma does. Their daughter in law is also in the photo: she’s my this-year’s colleague’s youngest sister (of 12 or 13 children!). They are a very special family.

La casa donde estamos alojando en estos días. Hay una reunión de comunión aquí, desde hace casi 50 años. Es la familia de Marta R quien trabaja en Venez. La mamá de ella falleció aqui a fines de enero.

The home where we’re staying right now. There’s been a Sunday morning mtg here, for the last almost 50 years. It’s Marta R’s family, she labors in Venez. Her mother passed away here the end of January.

Um pouco do que vejo saindo ao centro da cidade de Concepción. O outono tem chegado! Um bom frio já faz. Gosto também dele, como do calor. Mas acho que do calor um pouco mais!

A little of what I saw as I headed to downtown Concepción to run some errands today. Autumn has arrived! It’s good and nippy out already. I like it, just as I do the heat. But I think I like the heat a little more!

Ahora cuando regresaba del centro, pasé aquí cerca de la Univ de Concepción. Esta ciudad es sin lugar a dudas una ciudad universitaria!!

When I was walking back from town, I went right by the Univ of Concepción. This is definitely a college town, a city of universities!!

De nuevo en Chile, después de un vuelo muy tranquilo. La mayoría de lo que traje de Brasil no cabía en mis equipaje …sólo en el corazón. Muy agradecido.

Again back in Chile, after a very smooth flight. Most of what I brought back from Brazil wouldn’t even fit in my baggage …only in the heart. Very thankful.

At the convention place. This flower is so different it looks fake. Maybe some look on the Lord’s people in this way: how can people be like that and live like that and be happy like that? But it’s real.

En el lugar de anuales. Esta flor es dan diferente que parece falsa. Tal vez algunas personas ven a los hijos de Dios así: ¿Cómo pueden estas personas ser así y vivir así y estar contentas así? Pero es verdadero.

Yendo a velocidad el domingo en la tarde hacia el aeropuerto de Vitória. No por prisa, sino sólo porque manejaban así (sonrisa). Tuvimos suficiente tiempo, pero para nuestra tranquilidad, siempre es mejor llegar más temprano.

Speeding toward the Vitória airport Sunday evening. Not because there was any hurry, but because they were driving like that (smile). We has enough time, but for our peace of mind, it’s always better to get there early.

There was an article in the airline magazine (Azul Airlines–a good name, meaning “Blue”) about the benefits of meditation. It talks about quieting our minds for a few moments from the excessive information around us all the time, and from the “turbulence” in our heads. Was that a good choice of words for an airline mag, to be read inflight, bringing peace of mind to the traveler? Haha. In any case the second half of the flight turned out to be the most turbulent I’ve ever been on. It was quite fun and roller coaster-ish. I decided long ago that there’s absolutely nothing you can do about that type of thing, so you might as well enjoy it while you’re still alive! Not like the poor soul across the aisle from me who was white-knuckled and paralyzed! As far as meditating, I’m sure hoping to do plenty more of that about these past two months of great privileges!

Había un artículo en la revista a bordo (Aerolíneas Azul – un buen nombre, no?) sobre los beneficios de la meditación. Habla de aquietar nuestra mente por unos momentos del el exceso de información a nuestro alrededor todo el tiempo, y de la “turbulencia” en nuestras cabezas. ¿Fue una buena elección de palabras para una revista de línea aérea, para ser leído durante el vuelo, para llevar tranquilidad a los viajeros? Jaja. En todo caso, la segunda mitad del vuelo resultó ser el más turbulento que he experimentado. Fue muy divertido y como montaña rusa. Decidí hace mucho tiempo que no hay absolutamente nada que puedas hacer en tales circunstancias, así que más vale disfrutarlo no más mientras aún estás vivo! No como la pobre señora no muy lejos de mí con los nudillos blancos y paralizada! En cuanto a la meditación, estoy esperando hacer mucho más de eso pensando en estos últimos dos meses de grandes privilegios.

Hello, Campinas!! A young couple from Rio Claro met my flight and I returned to RC with them. We had supper at midnight in the home where I stayed that night. Because it’s been very warm, we had been planning to have a swim in the pool after supper (it was already Monday!), but it was pouring rain, so we skipped it, ha.

¡Hola, Campinas! Un matrimonio joven de Rio Claro fue a buscarme al aeropuerto y volví a RC con ellos. Cenamos a medianoche en otra casa donde también alojé. Y porque ha estado haciendo bastante calor, hace tiempo que habíamos planeado nadar un poco en la piscina después de la cena (ya era lunes!), pero estaba lloviendo a cántaros, así que desistimos, ja.

We stopped here at a drive-thru in RC to get some “esfihas” Arabic food. You could say they’re like little pizzas about 4 inches across. Good! And several flavors.

Paramos aquí en RC para llevar algunas “esfihas” (la “H” suena como “J”), que es comida árabe. Parecen, digamos, pequeñas pizzas que miden unos 10 centímetros de diámetro. Buenas! Y de varios sabores.

Desde que llegué a Brasil, he querido contarles de este rótulo. Es igual que en Chile. Pero uno de los siervos aquí me dijo parece que mi primer día aquí, “Eso dice ‘pare’ pero no es necesario.” Y lo dijo seriamente! Jajaja! Y es cierto. En los discos Pare no paran a menos que sea necesario. Todos hacen igual. Para ellos es más como el disco Ceder Paso. Guau!

Since I arrived in Brazil I’ve been wanting to tell you about this sign. it’s the same as in Chile: it’s a stop sign. But one of the brother workers here told me, “That says Stop, but it’s not necessary.” He was serious! Hahaha! And it’s true. No one observes the stop sign unless it’s necessary. To them it’s more like a Yield. Wow.

Yesterday, one of the friends took me around to a few places here. There’s a beautiful forest/park/almost jungle area right alongside the city of RC. Some awesome sights.

Ayer, uno de los amigos me llevó a ver unos pocos lugares aquí. Hay un hermoso bosque/parque/casi selva al lado de la ciudad de RC. Algunos lugares de interesantes.

But no alligators or boa constrictors to pose with for pictures like I did in Manaus on the Amazon River eight years ago.

Pero nada de caimanes o boa constrictores que pude tener en las manos para fotos como hice en Manaus sobre el Río Amazonas hace ocho años.

And the bamboo forest below was something that leaves you awestruck!

The five-year-old girl in the home where I stayed last night brought this to me “as a gift” she sweetly said. It’s a chocolate-strawberry truffle. I-T W-A-S G-O-O-D!

La niñita de cinco años de edad en la casa donde alojé anoche me trajo esto anoche “como un presente” me dijo dulcemente. Es una trufa de chocolate y frutilla (fresa). F-U-E B-O-N-A-Z-O!

We had a great day today, and the weather held true: nice and muggy. But there were fans. We were very refreshed though in the meetings.

Tuvimos un gran día hoy, y el clima cumplió con su deber: bastante húmedo. Pero había ventiladores. Sin embargo nos refrescamos mucho en las reuniones.

When the woman on the left above (I met her here in 2004) was a very little girl, she lived on the street, with her mother. The lady on the right, one of our friends, when passing through that area, would often see this little girl, feeling great compassion for her. It wasn’t a good situation. (!!) One day when she was passing through there again, she caught sight of the little girl, head first into a garbage can, feet waving in the air!! Our lady friend couldn’t take anymore, went over and took her by the feet and pulled her out of the garbage. When the little gal’s head came free, she looked around toward the one pulling her out, and our friend was so impressed to see this child with a huge smile on her face, ear-to-ear. SHE wasn’t feeling sorry for herself!! In any case, our friend asked the girl’s mother if she could take her home and provide for her, and the mother agreed. Long story, but they ended up adopting her into their family. Besides parents who serve God, she has a step brother in the work here, and also an aunt, one of her adoptive mother’s sisters. She herself was in the work here for a few years, but was not able to continue. She still has that million dollar smile, doesn’t she! Wouldn’t we too, if we were her, and understood what we’d been brought out of?! I’ve heard that at meal time, children who hear her story about being plucked out of the garbage can are more easily convinced to clean up their plate!!

Cuando era pequeña la señorita arriba a la izquierda (le conocí aquí en 2004), vivía en la calle, con su mamá. La señora a la derecha, una de nuestras amigas, cuando pasaba por aquella parte, a menudo veía a aquella niñita, y sentía mucha compasión por ella. No era nada buena una situación. (!!) Un día cuando pasaba por allí otra vez, la señora vio a la niñita cabizbaja en un tambor de basura, sus piernitas moviéndose en el aire!! Nuestra amiga ya no aguantaba más. Fue hasta donde estaba la niñita, y tomándole de las piernitas, le sacó de la basura. Cuando apareció la cabeza de la niñita, ésta le miraba a nuestra amiga, y la señora quedó bien impresionada al ver la grande sonrisa que tenía la niñita, se oreja a oreja! ELLA no estaba sintiendo lástima propia! En todo caso, la señora pidió permiso de la madre de la niñita para llevarla a casa y proveer por ella, y la madre consintió. Es larga la historia, pero terminaron adoptándole en su familia. Además de padres que sirven a Dios, ella tiene un ‘hermano’ en la obra aquí, y también una ‘tía’, hermana de su madre adoptiva. Ella misma también estuvo unos años en la obra aquí, pero no pudo continuar. Todavía tiene aquella sonrisa de millonario, ¿cierto? Por seguro nosotros tendríamos la misma sonrisa si fuéramos ella, y entendiéramos de qué habíamos sido rescatados!! Supe que a la hora de comer, los niños que oyen la historia de la niña sacada de la basura son más fácilmente convencidos a no dejar nada en su plato!

This young man visited us in Chile at special meeting time 2008. He also speaks very good English, as do many of the young people we’ve met here in Brazil.

Este joven nos visitó en Chile en las reuniones especiales de 2008. También habla muy bien el inglés, lo que también hablan muchos de los jóvenes que hemos conocido aquí en Brasil.

¿Reconoce a nuestro “chofer”? Es él que nos llevó a algunos lugares en Belo Horizonte durante las anuales allí hace dos semanas. Uno de los siervos aquí es tío de él. Apreciamos el esfuerzo que hacen varios, y el costo del transporte que pagan, para llegar a estas reuniones. Él y otros 9 viajaron 8 horas en bus para llegar aquí, aunque también asistieron en sus propias anuales en Belo Horizonte.

You recognize our “chauffeur”? He’s the one who took us around to some places during our time in Belo Horizonte two weeks ago. One of the workers here is his uncle. We sure value the effort many make to be here at these meetings. He, plus 9 others, traveled 8 hours by bus to be here, after having also attended their own conv in Belo Horizonte.

Esto dos hombres son hermanos, hijos de los dueños de esta propiedad donde estamos celebrando las reuniones aquí.

Hoy hace 65 años que papá y mamá se casaron. (Interesante: Esta es entrada #64 en este blog.) Inevitablemente tuvieron sus dificultades, pero me gusta recordar una de las cosas que escribieron en una carta a muchos de nosotros después de su boda de oro, casados ya 50 años: “El Señor nos juntó, y el Señor nos ha mantenido juntos.” Tuvieron 56 años, 4 meses y 3 semanas. MUY AGRADECIDO por las buenas decisiones que tomaron en la vida-que no siempre eran los más fáciles – que siguen siendo una ayuda espiritual para nosotros!

It was 65 years ago today that Dad & Mom tied the knot, which, inevitably threatened at times to unravel. But I like to remember something they wrote to many of us after their 50th. “The Lord brought us together, and the Lord has kept us together.” They had 56 years, 4 months and 3 weeks. SO GRATEFUL for the right decisions that they made in life–that weren’t always the easiest–that continue to be a spiritual help to us! (Interesting: This is post #64 on this blog.)

Someone took this one at 56 years, 4 months and two weeks, just seven days before Dad left us. We have an abundance of good memories. And since we can still have spiritual fellowship with God, just as we had with them, that definitely cushions our feelings regarding their absence from us now. Dad left us 9 years ago. Mom, 2.

Alguien sacó esta foto a los 56 años, 4 meses y 2 semanas, sólo siete días antes que Papá se nos fue. Tenemos una abundancia de buenos recuerdos. Y como todavía podemos tener comunión espiritual con Dios, así como tuvimos con ellos, esto amortigua mucho la ausencia de ellos ahora. Papá se fue hace 9 años. Mamá, hace 2.

The spot where 3 of us brother workers had a swim yesterday late afternoon. It was almost an hour south of the city, and very few people.

El lugar donde fuimos 3 de los siervos fuimos a nadar ayer en la tarde. Era casi una hora al sur de la ciudad, y muy poca gente.

Our gracious hosts at our supper last night. That’s the young husband’s mother in the first photo, then the couple of the home. The young wife looks about 18, but he told me she’s 27! He’s the one who took us boys swimming.

Nuestros anfitriones en la cena de anoche. La primera foto es la madre del joven esposo, y la segunda es la pareja de la casa. La joven esposa parece tener unos 18 años, pero él me dijo que ella tiene 27! Él es el que nos llevó a nadar.

The young brothers set up 121 chairs for the conv here: 3 mtgs on Saturday and 3 on Sunday. (I’m to speak in the first one tomorrow and in the second one Sunday.) This afternoon it’s nice and warm and muggy all of a sudden. It got up to 36° (97°) today, with somewhere around 75% humidity. The weatherman says we should get down to only 32 or 33° (90-91°) for tomorrow and Sunday.

Los siervos jóvenes instalaron 121 sillas para las anuales aquí: 3 reuniones el sábado y 3 el domingo. (Me toca en la primera reunión mañana y en la segunda el domingo.) Esta tarde de repente está haciendo un agradable calor y muy húmedo. Llegó hasta los 36° (97°) hoy, y alrededor del 76% de humedad. Los meteorólogos dicen que mañana y domingo tendremos apenas 32 ó 33° (90-91°).

The conv is on the property of this great couple. He’s 89. The testimony they have is that when he was younger and more able, they were like “the house of Stephanas”, quoting from 1 Cor 16.15, “…they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints.” Everyone have a wonderful weekend.

Las anuales se celebran aquí en la propiedad de esta gran pareja. Él tiene 89 años. El testimonio que tienen es que cuando él era más joven y con más fuerzas, eran como “la casa de Estéfanas”, citando de 1 Cor 16.15, “…ellos se han dedicado al servicio de los santos.” Que todos Uds. tengan un lindo fin de semana.

Así nombran a esta área. Es un puerto moderno (petróleo y granos, entre otros)–una ciudad progresista. Abajo, algunas fotos de la casa donde algunos de nosotros estamos alojando.

No, no Leaning Tower of Pisa. It’s the Leaning Camera of Tourist. Much more easily accomplished, but not near the tourist attraction as that one over there in Italy.

Here’s the entrance to that big hill you can see between the columns of the bridge a few shots back. This hill reminded me a lot of Cerro Santa Lucía in downtown Santiago, Chile, but it’s higher, and has an old convent at the top.

Aquí estamos en la entrada de aquel cerro que se ve debajo del puente unas fotos más atrás. Este cerro me hizo recordar mucho al Cerro Santa Lucía en el centro de Santiago, Chile, pero éste es más alto, y en la cumbre hay un viejo convento.

Inside the convent it had signs that said, “No flash photography.” But I didn’t feel like taking any pictures in there. The panoramic view outside though is spectacular.

Dentro del convento había letreros que decían, “No sacar fotos con flash.” Pero no tenía deseos de sacar fotos adentro. Sin embargo, la vista panorámica por fuera es espectacular.

Two plants at the top, by the convent. Some kind of berry bush (we didn’t try it, even though it looks good), and Crown of Thorns. I heard a super religious woman say, about 30 years ago in Los Angeles, California, that this plant used to only have thorns and leaves, and that only after Jesus’ death did it start to grow red flowers, “…like little drops of blood!” she gushed. Makes a touching story, but somehow I doubt it. Impossible to know for sure.

Dos plantas en la cumbre, junto al convento. Algún tipo de fruta (no la probamos, aunque tiene buena apariencia), y Corona de Espinas. Hace como 30 años, en Los Ángeles, California, una mujer súper religiosa nos contó que esta planta antes sólo tenía espinas y hojas. Pero que después de morir Jesús, esta planta comenzó a tener flores, “…como muchas gotitas de sangre!” aventuró efusivamente. Parece una historia conmovedor, pero lo dudo. Por cierto, es imposible averiguar.

This is where we’re heading south, right down the coast, just a short ways south, toward our supper appmt. We stopped a few times by the beach. But we aren’t going to go in until today, this afternoon. One of our friends offered to come by later an take two of us to a less-frequented spot for a swim. I think it’ll be my first time to actually swim in the Atlantic, though I have had my hands in the water.

Aquí nos dirigimos hacia el sur, por la costa, hacia nuestro cena planeada. Nos detuvimos un par de veces por la playa. Pero no vamos a meternos al agua hasta ahora en la tarde. Uno de nuestros amigos se ofreció para llegar a buscar a dos de nosotros y llevarnos a un lugar menos frecuentado a nadar. Creo que va a ser primera vez para mi nadar en el Atlántico, aunque una vez metí las manos en el agua hace años en Argentina.

I’d never seen one of these in pink. Course, any color for these creatures wouldn’t be too attractive! Whoops, I’d better be nice: she’s probably somebody’s “moth-er”!!

Cheese bread, which is one of the state of Minas Gerais’s claim to fame, and much sought after in this country. They’re sure good, especially when served hot.

Pan de queso, que es su salto a la fama culinaria del estado de Minas Gerais, y muy buscado en este país. Por cierto es muy rico, especialmente cuando lo sirven caliente.

The hall of the home we stayed in the weekend of Ipatinga mtgs. There was real peace in that home, a wonderful atmosphere for fellowship, visiting, good times. We did our share of laughing too.

The place where we had the Ipatinga meetings. It’s a school. Down here at the far end was dining. The meetings were upstairs in a large room. It was nice and warm!!

Next day, Monday the 2nd, a good, 8-hour trip in the train again Monday, from Ipatinga to Vitória. This is on the Atlantic coast, about seven hours north of Rio. Or did I tell you that already? And again our dear friends along the way met the train and loaded us with bags of food, an excellent hot lunch which we enjoyed after they waved us off, with the Brazilian flag. The stop at that station was only about 10 or 15 minutes.

Siguiente día, el lunes 2, un buen viaje de 8 horas en tren el lunes, desde Ipatinga hasta Vitória. Esta ciudad queda una siete horas al norte de Rio de Janeiro. O tal vez ya les conté eso? Y de nuevo, nuestros queridos amigos llegaron a la estación para esperar el tren y cargarnos con bolsas de comida. Un buen almuerzo caliente, que disfrutamos después de despedirnos de ellos, con bandera brasileira y todo. Estuvimos en esa estación de tren sólo unos 10 ó 15 minutos.

Y mantuvieron bien limpio el vagón del tren, llegando el joven seguido a trapear, dejando todo con olor a limpio, mientras otros llegaban a menudo para retirar basura y dejar otras bolsas de plástico para más.

We arrived about 8:30 PM to a large, busy train station, and we’re whisked off to our different host homes in this city of Vitória. The metropolitan area has about a million inhabitants.

Alrededor de las 8:30PM llegamos a una estación de tren muy ocupada, y fuimos llevados un par aquí otro par acá, etc., a las diferentes casas de nuestros amigos anfitriones aquí en Vitória. El área metropolitana tiene como un millón de habitantes.
