How would you like to live in a city by THAT name? (See the title of this post.) It has been extra special to be there and in all of this field, visiting among these wonderful friends and hopeful contacts. The Portuguese language is definitely coming back, and I’m learning more too, even tho by the time my Day Three here was getting on, I was totally saturated with Portuguese, and I had this unspoken but overwhelming feeling, “I can’t do this!” But I was also aware that the feeling would pass if I just waited patiently, and tried not to be such a “miserable perfectionist” (those two words sure go together, hmm?). Anyway, I did, and it did.
In one visit–with some people whom I had (mis)understood would be contacts, people who had not yet begun to serve God, but who were listening–I had a special experience: I was totally impressed with one young couple that was also in on that visit. At first I couldn’t understand much at all of what was going on or being said, but I was observing these two especially, and they veritably glowed, and their manner of speaking was so outstanding. I thought to myself, “These young people are close to the Kingdom! They already have the Spirit, and are maybe only waiting for an opportunity to be given to manifest it openly!?” But as the visit continued and I began to understand more and catch on, it became clear that they’ve been serving God for some time already. It was an outstanding experience for me, to get to discern their spirits without the hindrances that verbal understanding can sometimes bring… That’s really more of what it’s all about, isn’t it: what we are and show, over and above what we might say with words. You can’t tire of seeing that glow of joy in the eyes and faces of the Lord’s people, among old and young and in between. Another town, Campos do Jordão (Fields of Jordan) is sometimes referred to as The Switzerland of Brazil and it IS quite a nice place. Anyway, we’ll make more visits this week, and a study mtg Wednesday evening (Daniel 1), then by Thursday evening the 16th we should be in Rio Claro, a short ways north of São Paulo, where conv preps begin soon.
¿Cómo les gustaría vivir en una ciudad con ESE nombre? (Véase el título de esta entrada.) Ha sido pero tan especial estar allí y en todo este campo, visitando entre estos amigos maravillosos y con los contactos que dan esperanzas. El idioma (portugués) definitivamente me está volviendo, y estoy aprendiendo más también, aunque para cuando mi Tercer Día aquí estaba avanzando bien, estaba con un sentir, silencioso pero abrumador, que, “Yo no puedo hacer esto!” Pero también sabía bien que lo que sentía pasaría ya si yo esperaba pacientemente, sin tratar de ser tan “miserablemente perfeccionista” (dos palabras que definitivamente van juntas, ¿no?). Y así lo hice, y en efecto resultó.
En una visita–con unas personas que yo había (mal)entendido que serían contactos, personas que todavía no habían comenzado a servir a Dios, pero que estaban escuchando–tuve una experiencia especial: Me impresionó ¡de una manera! una pareja joven que estaba también en la visita. Yo no podía entender, al principio de la visita, gran cosa de lo que estaba pasando o de lo que decían, pero estaba observándoles especialmente a ellos dos, y en verdad brillabansus cara, y la MANERA que se expresaban era tan sobresaliente. Pensé entre mí, “¡Estos jóvenes están cerca del Reino! Ya tienen el Espíritu, y tal vez sólo están esperando que les den oportunidad de manifestarlo abiertamente!” (como el domingo iba a ser la última predicación). Pero al seguir la visita, empecé a darme cuenta que hacía tiempo que ya estaban sirviendo a Dios. Fue una experiencia destacada para mí, el privilegio de discernir su espíritu sin los estorbos que a veces puede haber cuando estamos fijándonos tanto en lo que se dice. Y de eso mismo se trata, ¿no? ..lo que seamos y mostremos, mucho más allá de lo que pudiéramos decir con palabras. No se cansa nunca uno de observar lo que irradia en el rostro del pueblo de Dios, mayores, menores y todos los que están entre ellos en edad. Otro pueblo, Campos do Jordão (Campos del Jordán): a veces se refieren a él como La Suiza de Brazil y en verdad es un lugar muy bonito. En todo caso, tendremos más visitas esta semana, y un estudio el miércoles (Daniel 1), entonces para la tarde del jueves 16 estaríamos ya en Rio Claro, que queda un trecho al norte de São Paulo, donde pronto comenzarán los preparativos de anuales.
